Taking a dab is a lot different than smoking a bong or hitting a vape pen. But if you’re new to the process entirely, check out this complete guide to dab rigs, which will help you identify them in the store and know how to use them when you bring one home.

What is a dab rig?

Dab rigs are glass pipes made for vaporizing concentrates in the dabbing method. Dab rigs are a lot like water pipes, but they’re specially designed to optimize the dabbing experience from concentrates like shatter or wax. That said, they’re not ideal for flower. Since vapor is more easily lost to the elements than smoke, dab rigs are usually much smaller with fewer percolators or other bells and whistles so that there’s less space for the vapor to disappear or get filtered away. One other key difference is that they usually have a much smaller mouthpiece and come standard with a quartz banger, with which you will vaporize your concentrates.

Anatomy of a dab rig

There are a few dab rig parts you should familiarize yourself with. They’re a lot like an ordinary bong, but they have a few minor differences that separate them into their own category.

Small chamber: Dab rigs are much smaller than bongs and usually contain few, if any, percolators. The small size is better for drawing in dab vapor without letting it build up or sacrificing flavors.

Fixed downstem: Dab rigs usually come with a fixed, upright downstem that makes it easier to attach a dab nail or banger to it. The upright position also keeps the banger further away from your face, making it easier to dab.

Quartz banger: Dab rigs come with a quartz banger, which is shaped like a bucket. You just drop your concentrates into it after heating it up for quick vaporization of your favorite concentrates.

Narrow mouthpiece: Unlike bongs, dab rigs usually have a smaller, narrower mouthpiece which makes for smoother and more flavorful dab hits. They’re often at an angle so you can hit it from a table comfortably.

As we mentioned, dab rigs are used to vaporize concentrates. They work when you heat up the quartz banger using a butane torch and apply your concentrate to the banger. Once the concentrate begins to vaporize, you cap the banger with a carb cap and inhale the vapor through the mouthpiece. After you inhale your dab, remove the carb cap and wipe down the banger with a cotton swab and a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to prevent it from getting chazzed.

Dab rigs make it possible to experience the full range of flavors and potencies of your favorite concentrates, so they’re a necessary accessory. They do come in many different shapes and sizes, too. For example, some bangers feature an inline filtration system that bubbles your vapor to cool it down without dissipating it away too much, preserving your flavors. Another example is the recycler, which continuously moves water to cool your vapor instead of using a bunch of percolators, which will make your concentrates less flavorful.
