With its extra potency, kief makes an excellent bowl topper. But hash is even better, and if you’ve ever wanted to make good use of your kief, the first step is learning how to collect it. You’ll need is a good grinder capable of collecting copious amounts of kief, but once you have that, the process is super straightforward. Here’s a complete breakdown on collecting and storing kief and how you can make it into hash or shatter from the comfort of your home.

What is the best grinder for collecting kief?

To make hash, you’ll need to collect a lot of kief. Kief builds up at the bottom of your stash jars after a long time, but if you want to expedite the process, you’ll want to invest in a good grinder. The best grinders for collecting kief are 4-chamber grinders with a kief collector. The first two chambers contain the actual grinding elements, and the third will catch your ground flower. The final chamber is fitted with a fine mesh screen that separates all the delicious kiefy goodness from the buds into its own section for easy collection and storage. 4-chamber grinders are the easiest way to make kief.

Does kief get you higher than flower?

Kief is a concentrated form of cannabis flower as it contains nothing but the THC-laden trichomes from the buds. While regular buds check in around 12-25% THC, kief is concentrated and contains up to 70% THC. With that in mind, kief makes you higher than flower since you’ll get stronger effects from smaller amounts of material. When you press kief into hash, it becomes a more easily accessible and dabbable concentrate than kief alone, which can be messy. However, it still checks in around 70% THC, making both kief and hash stronger than flower alone — on par with other concentrates.

How do you press kief at home?

Once you have plenty of kief, you’re ready to make hash. There are a few materials you’ll need to get started, but usually you already have them lying around your house. Below is a step-by-step guide to making hash at home.

What you’ll need:

  • Large mason jar
  • Boiling water
  • Oven mitt
  • Plenty of kief
  • Parchment paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape

How to make hash from kief:

  1. Empty your kief onto a sheet of parchment paper. You’ll want to keep it in a nice neat square or rectangle shape, if possible.
  2. Fold the parchment paper around the hash, keeping it in that square or rectangle shape. You can tape your parchment paper to help hold the folds, but be sure to cut off any excess paper. You only want one layer covering the whole square without any overlap.
  3. Take another sheet of parchment paper and place your folded kief square on top of it. This sheet of paper is like a placemat to protect your surfaces.
  4. Fill the jar with boiling water and tightly fasten the lid. Once its full of hot water, use an oven mitt or a towel to protect your hands from the heat.
  5. Roll the hot jar across the paper-covered hash square and press it gently as you roll it back and forth. Keep this up for about ten minutes.
  6. Take your hash square and stick it in the freezer for an hour. Freezing it helps make it easier to remove from the paper once its cool.
  7. Remove it from the parchment paper and enjoy! Hash can be added to joints, blunts, bowls, pipes and bongs. You can even dab or vaporize it.

How to make bubble hash (AKA ice hash)

If you’re wondering how to make hash in a different way, you can use the ice hash method (AKA bubble hash). Bubble hash is a little different than pressed hash, but it’s technically the same thing — concentrated kief. Collecting kief in this method is a lot faster than waiting for your supply to build up. You can make it with flower or trim you already have on hand. You can check out our in-depth guide on making bubble hash here, but below are the cliff notes.

You will need:

  • A 5 gallon bucket
  • Ice
  • Cold water
  • Mesh micron bubble bags or silk screen filters
  • Cannabis flowers
  • A big mixing spoon

To make it:

  1. Layer your bubble bags into the bucket from smallest to largest size.
  2. Fill the bottom of the bucket with ice cold water until its about half full
  3. Add your weed to the bucket, and top it with plenty of ice
  4. Fill the bucket until its full of cold water
  5. If your bucket has a lid, you can shake it until it’s agitated. If not, use a big spoon or a paddle and stir for 15-20 minutes. Add ice periodically to keep it ice cold.
  6. Strain all of the liquid out of the bags and turn them inside out over a flat, dry surface.
  7. Allow the trichomes to dry, and then scrape them together. Voila! You now have ice hash. From here, you can press it if you’d like, or store it in a cool, dry place.

How to make shatter from kief

If you want to take your kief to the next level, you can skip the hash and turn it into shatter at home. Making shatter from kief is easier than making hash from kief, and you only need three ingredients!

What you’ll need:

  • Kief
  • Parchment paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Hair straightener
  • Oven mitts

How to do it:

  1. Add your kief to a sheet of parchment paper and fold it in a square shape. Remove excess paper, and keep it in a single layer.
  2. Heat your straightener to the lowest setting and allow it to come to temperature for about 2 minutes
  3. Clamp the straightener over the paper-wrapped kief and press hard. Clamp the straighter shut with one hand and squeeze it firmly with the other oven mitt-covered hand. Hold it for about 10 seconds.
  4. Remove the parchment paper and separate any leftover kief. Allow the oil to lay on a flat surface to harden into shatter.
  5. Take the leftover kief and repeat steps 1-4 until there’s no kief left.
  6. Once the shatter is hardened and cooled, it’s ready to be used!
