Diamonds have always been a status symbol for wealth and a taste for the finer things in life. The same is true for pure THC diamonds. THC diamonds are top-shelf cannabis concentrates, but what exactly are they and how are they made? Weed diamonds are the most potent, flavorful, and concentrated form of cannabis on the market. Here’s a quick rundown covering everything you need to know about THC diamonds and how to enjoy them.

What are THC diamonds?

THC Diamonds look a lot like the diamonds you’re already familiar with, hence the name. They are THC crystals made when live resin is extracted from cannabis using a cold-extraction method and pressure. However, the diamonds that form aren’t THC yet, they’re pure THCa crystals, and they check in at 97-99% THCa. The other 1-3% of a THC diamond is terpenes and other cannabinoids, making these diamonds the most potent and pure extract product on the market. Each one varies in size from a grain of sand up to several-gram rocks.

THCa is an inactive cannabinoid. At a fundamental level, THCa is a non-psychoactive form of THC that needs to be heated up in order to transform into the stuff that gets you high. That’s why diamonds are typically smoked in a dab rig or vaporizer. Joints and bongs don’t burn hot enough to make this transformation.

Diamonds are sold in a few different ways though, which is why “THC diamonds” is considered more of an umbrella term. They form in a few different ways and vary in potency based on how they’re extracted and processed afterwards. Some diamonds are sold in a saucy, high-terpene extract typically labeled as “diamonds” or “diamond sauce” while others are sold as diamonds alone with no sauce, called “THCa Diamonds”. Sometimes they’re even labelled as pure THC, but they’re still inactive THCa that needs to be subjected to heat to get you high. Regardless of how they’re labelled and sold in the dispensary, all diamonds are crystals made of pure THCa.

How potent are THC diamonds?

As we’ve stated, THC diamonds are the most potent cannabis concentrates out there testing in just under 100% THCa. Most people use diamonds to help manage treatment-resistant medical conditions, though they’ve become insanely popular in recreational markets for their powerful effects that make for a pleasant, flavorful, and heady high. THC diamond wax is so potent that the high can linger for hours at a time, which is a lot longer than the experience from flower alone or even other lesser concentrates like shatter or wax.

How are THCa diamonds made?

So how to make THC diamonds? Like all diamonds, THCa diamonds form under pressure. But first, they’re extracted from the cannabis plant using a cold-extraction method. From there, the extract specialist (please don’t try this at home) adds pressure to the oil through a chromatography machine until the crystals form. The first half of the process is a lot like making live resin. Wax diamonds are made with freshly-harvested flash-frozen cannabis to help preserve the integrity of the cannabinoids, terpenes, and trichomes.

The second half of forming the diamonds is accomplished in one of two ways: using a closed-loop system, or the crystalline method.

THCa Diamond

1. Closed-loop extraction method

In a closed-loop extraction method, a liquid solvent is used to separate the THC and terpenes from plant materials. The system leaves behind small amounts of the solvent to supersaturate a solution with THCa. Afterwards, the solvent is slowly purged over a couple of days, and in that time, the diamonds form. This process can take anywhere from two days to several weeks, leaving behind pure THCa crystals.

2. Crystalline method

The crystalline method is a lot like making rock candy. The THC isolate is mixed with a solvent to create a supersaturated solution, then heat and pressure is added to the solution. As the diamonds form, the solvent is evaporated out. Extractors will then re-introduce the strain’s terpenes or a different terpene sauce to create THC diamonds in sauce. THCa is more powerful when terpenes are involved thanks to the entourage effect between cannabinoids and terpenes.

How to smoke THC diamonds

Dab diamonds are made of THCa, which means they won’t get you high until you heat them up. The best way to smoke THC diamonds is by dabbing them or vaporizing them. Luckily, the process is pretty much the same either way.

First you’ll load your diamond and some terp sauce onto a dab tool and drop it into a preheated quartz banger. If you’re vaporizing or dabbing, you can also cold-start by applying the concentrate and then heating the banger or vaporizer around it until it begins to vaporize. From there just cap it with a carb cap and inhale.

As a pro tip, remember that THCa diamonds are up to 4x stronger than a hit from a joint. If you’re not sure what you’re dealing with, start with a little diamond at first to see how it’ll affect you before smoking a whole one.

Are THCa diamonds safe?

Generally speaking, yes, smoking diamonds is safe. While there are some negative effects of smoking anything, or breathing anything that isn’t oxygen for that matter, they’re typically received pretty well outside of a little residual resin. They are very potent, though. However, even if you smoke too much at once and feel paranoid, the effect wears off after a few minutes and you’re fine. The only time THCa diamonds aren’t safe is if you are sensitive to THC or have an allergic reaction to the terpenes found in cannabis.
