You’ve seen the “710” digits popping up everywhere from Reddit forums to Instagram hashtags. Now it’s time to uncover the hazy origins and true meaning of this omnipresent term and joyous holiday beloved by the cannabis community.

What is 710? Is 710 like 420? Are you supposed to follow the 4:20 smoking tradition and light up at 7:10 am/pm? Do you celebrate on July 10th?

We answer all your 710 related questions below.

What is 710?

So what is 710? 710 or 7/10 is a relatively new term in the cannabis lexicon compared to the over-three-decades-old “420” designation. In today’s dabbing world, 710 refers to “oil,”  and July 10th is known as “OIL Day”

If you look at the number upside down written out or on a calculator, you can make out the word oil, as in cannabis concentrates or dabs, the potent and long-lasting cannabinoid and terpene extracts.

If someone or something describes themselves as “710 friendly,” you can expect them to be okay with dabbing, in general. 710 friendly means someone is comfortable with concentrate products and being around someone who uses those products.

History of 710

So, where did this three-digit numeral originate? Who was the first person high enough to spot the similarity between 710 and the word oil?

Unfortunately, the origins of 710 are up for debate. Many users agree the term became popularized around the early 2010s in online forums and became more widespread with the introduction of the 7/10 Cup in 2012.

In 2014, High Times published a piece acknowledging the importance of the holiday. The 7/10 Cup celebrates all types of cannabis concentrates and oils on July 10th.

7/10 culture was just bubbling up when Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize adult-use cannabis, which opened the door for a flourishing cannabis extract market.

States enforced building and extraction equipment codes to remove the danger from working with flammable solvents such as butane and propane.

Today, 710 is celebrated worldwide by imbibing in a range of concentrates including vape cartridges, shatter, oil, wax, budder, sauce, crumble, live resin, hash and more uplifting products.

Is 7/10 the new 4/20?

4/20 is imprinted into the minds and hearts of stoners across the world. Nothing will ever replace the cultural significance of 4/20’s origins or meaning. While 4/20 is forever, there’s always room for more holidays and an excuse to dab.

710 friendly

710, which appears the same as OIL spelled backwards, has become the 420 equivalent for concentrates.

7/10 has been a grassroots effort all along. As concentrates became more available, consumers loved them and continue to at a growing rate compared to flower. Industry publications and social media platforms are rife with mentions of the holiday.
